Crisis Intervention

The nature of crisis in most of our lives is such that it happens at inconvenient times and usually places tremendous stress on a family. At the same time, a crisis presents a tremendous opportunity for change. Our Crisis Intervention services can be accessed at any time of the day or night, seven days a week. The goal is to utilize the energy generated by the crisis to teach and deescalate the family situation. Our Crisis Intervention services are provided through four distinct program areas:
Assistance Center

provides a 24-hour crisis telephone line as well as emergency and planned short term respite care for youth at risk of placement disruptions from their home. Host Homes for youth who need a temporary "home away from home" during the crisis they are experiencing.
Street Outreach

provides outreach programs with runaways and youth living on the streets in an attempt to support and transition them into more productive lifestyles.
Project Safe Place

is a network of businesses which partner with Connecting Point to offer kids a safe haven in their community; these local organizations open their doors to young people in trouble and keep them safe while Connecting Point responds to the emergency.

Assistance Center
This service is provided at the Assistance Center at 1212 Cherry Street. The service is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. The service is available to any young person 17 years old or younger who is at risk of homelessness, domestic violence or self-harm. We attempt to receive parental consent immediately and will not extend placements beyond 24 hours without parental authorization. Placements are short term, typically between 72 hours and one week. Our goal is to achieve client safety and develop a treatment plan that assures client safety prior to discharge. Clients receive daily interventions from licensed clinicians and participate in morning and afternoon psycho-educational groups. Staff work to engage the clientıs family into the treatment process. Success is determined by the number of clients who can be successfully reunited or placed in an appropriate setting upon discharge.

Therapeutic Host Homes
This service provides a range of placements for youth 17 years old or younger whom, either due to their behavior or the inadequate conditions of their natural home, are unable to reside in their natural home. All foster care providers are licensed through the Ohio Department of Human services and receive 32 hours of additional training from Connecting Point prior to receiving a placement. Crisis placements may occur for up to 30 days and generally accommodate 1 client at a time. Longer-term placements may range from 6 months or until the client reaches the age of twenty-one. The goal of the program is to assure that, at discharge, each client is residing in a permanent home that is equipped to manage the clientıs individual needs. The number of clients that are discharged into a permanent placement measures success.

Street Outreach
Connecting Point staff provide a van outreach service 4 nights a week, traveling the streets, parks, and other places throughout Greater Toledo where young people "hang out." The van travels 5 pm -11 pm Tuesday thru Friday each week. Staff also coordinate with law enforcement, Lucas County Children Services, and various community organizations to identify needy populations and provide outreach services to runaway or homeless youth. Staff visit identified locations on a routine basis with the goal of locating and when possible engaging youth that are at-risk and living outside of a safe environment. Staff provide youth with basic necessities (Food, clothing, referral information, health packets when needed, etc.) to decrease the risk these youth face and, whenever possible, engage youth to become formally involved in services designed to get them off the streets.

Project SafePlace
Project SafePlace is a nationally acclaimed outreach program partnering with local businesses and community organizations to provide immediate help to young people who find themselves in threatening or dangerous situations. Connecting Point is the agency responsible for the operation of Project SafePlace in the greater Toledo area. We currently have 65 SafePlace sites to assist kids who feel they have no other place to turn. Connecting Point and our SafePlace partners are dedicated to the children and families of Northwest Ohio and are here to help... 24-hours a day!
